Leisure, sport and culture, mobile free breathing space in Urretxu
- The sports centers, libraries, castles, cultural centers, schools, etc. of the town have added the badge to the entrance, asking people to leave their mobile phone. “It’s about enjoying quality leisure, paying attention to it, getting rid of the distraction that the mobile usually brings.”
There are more and more schools that have been declared as hubs without mobile phones, “although the challenges of schools are still alive”, but at a time when society is “more and more aware”, the movement has expanded and the demand has been extended to buildings linked to leisure in Urretxu. “The idea is to enjoy in a more conscious way what the leisure space offers us, to socialize with those around us, to have a more real perception of time; in short, to dedicate quality and time to the sport, cultural or leisure action”, explains Ane Miren Ormazabal, parents of the Ascension Heads of Urretxu-Zumarraga association. The association has launched the initiative together with the City Council of Urretxu.
Properly dedicating our leisure time helps to “promote the well-being of children and adolescents, but also of all users in general,” says Ormazabal.

In view of the fact that the annex is a recommendation rather than an obligation, to what extent will it be effective? “We don’t know if people will comply, but we have hope,” says Ormazabal. Even if it’s a recommendation, when it sees the badge it will be remembered for its use, and we hope that at least it will serve to make that click on the user’s conscience.” In addition to awareness, the campaign also aims to encourage reflection, both children and adults, to reflect on the theme “because we all need it”.
The parents add that the City Council is in contact with sports and other associations and will have feedback on the impact of the initiative before the end of the course.
Ane Miren Ormazabal pointed out that the town of Zumarraga, where Urretxu is a neighbour, has also shown interest and that the city council will join the collaboration.
