On Wednesday, at 08:15 a.m., 20 activists from the Bizi movement hang the pair of placards from the Council of the Department of Atlantic Pyrenees CD64 to denounce the imposition of the TAV project. In particular, they have demanded the suspension of the GPSO - LGV project, abbreviated for the names Grand projet ferroaire du Sud-Ouest - High-speed Line in French and Spanish. GPSO is a project designed for the south-west of France that includes the construction of two high-speed lines, one between Bordeaux and Tolosa (Occitania) and the other between Bordeaux and San Juan de Garazi. Thus, passing through Euskal Herria, this part of the TAV would join the Spanish and French States.
The banners used for the protest read two clear slogans: CD64, n'imposez pas la LGV au Pays Basque (CD64, not imposing the LGV in Euskal Herria) and CD64, no violas! Basque Country NO to the TAV!. With the action the movement wished to reaffirm its opposition to the controversial project "with enormous economic, ecological and social costs", denouncing the imposition of the project.
Remember that in December 2021 80% of the elected representatives of the Basque College voted against the project. "In Euskal Herria, within civil society and the political arena, an emblematic example of the rejection of this project," says the movement. However, the project is still on the table and in this respect the Council of the Department of the Atlantic Pyrenees and its President, Jean-Jacques Lasserre, have been questioned, "because it goes against the opinion of an entire territory directly affected by the project". The project would also involve a tax increase for citizens residing less than an hour from the TAV station.
Alongside the complaints, the movement has also called for the "modernisation" and adequacy of the existing railway. "It is a realistic, more economic and environmentally friendly alternative," they say. They recall that the mayors of Irun, Baiona and Bordeaux have asked for a study on the modernisation of the railways in order to prepare and update it. "Now there are 120 other charges that support your call," they warn.
