United States supports patent suspension to increase production
- Joe Biden’s government has changed its mind and supported the temporary withdrawal of the patent to COVID-19 vaccines to speed up global vaccination. The Government has stated that "the exceptional situation requires exceptional and not exceptional measures".
President Joe Biden has for several months opposed the move from the withdrawal of the patent and has received numerous pressures from Ejecutivo.Debido the current situation, the US Government has changed its mind: In India and South America, the number of infections has increased considerably and the inequalities in dealing with the pandemic are becoming increasingly apparent. The US representative of the World Trade Organization, Katherin Tai, has stated that the Government believes in patents but "the exceptional situation of the pandemic requires exceptional measures."
Last October, India and South Africa asked the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the temporary withdrawal of vaccine patents, which were joined by countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. It was intended that vaccine production should not be dependent on pharmaceutical companies and that vaccination campaigns should be speeded up in order to control the pandemic. But the United States opposed it.
From now on, negotiations for the provisional withdrawal of copyright from vaccines will begin and, according to Tai, “they will need time.” The withdrawal of the patent is only the starting point. Preparing for the debate in Europe
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that she was "prepared" to discuss the exemption from the withdrawal of the patent and would urge the producer countries to "dismantle export measures and hamper supply chains".
It expressed its desire to reverse the situation and added that the European Commission "is ready to discuss any proposal that can effectively and pragmatically address the crisis".
