The proposal to declare 3 December 'Euskadi Day' will be discussed in the Basque Parliament
- The proposal presented by EH Bila states that it is the most appropriate date, “with Basque being the main symbol that symbolizes the union of Basque citizens”. The PNV has abstained and the PSE and PP have opposed the procedure.
The proposal of the nationalist coalition to declare the International Day of the Basque Language, December 3, “Euskadi Day” has been approved by the Basque Parliament with the votes of EH Bil and Podemos. There will be a debate on this date in the UAE Parliament.
Declaring December 3 as the “Day of the Basque Country” and celebrating it as an official holiday is the ideal for the EH Meeting that has presented the proposal. “To express the unity and cohesion of the citizens of Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa”, the Basque language is, in his opinion, the main symbol of the Basque citizenship. On the other hand, the coalition considers that it can be a way to “consider the support that the Basque needs”, in the words of Pello Urizar.
The Basque Government has seen the proposal discussed in the Basque Parliament, as stated by the Governing Board of Urkullu in December. Paradoxically, the PNV has resorted to abstention and has voted against being processed by the PSE-EE, a member of the government, like the PP parliamentarians.
The government of Patxi López declared October 25 a public holiday in 2010, the same day on which the Statute of Gernika was signed. In 2013, however, this measure was rejected at the initiative of Parliament, and last year October 7th was the official holiday due to the 80-year anniversary of the formation of the Euzkadi government of President Agirre.
