GES-Global Energy Services has launched the solar power generation project at Olite. It will have a power of 50 MWp and will have a total of 74,000 solar panels, so the facilities are expected to be launched before the end of the year.
The plant will generate about 85,000 megawatts of electricity a year, equivalent to the annual consumption of some 24,000 households in one year, according to data provided by the company based in Bilbao, GES. In addition, it is expected that "20,000 tons of CO2 will be avoided". In principle, the work is expected to be completed in the first half of 2025 and the project will be launched by the end of the year.
The solar power plant, which will have a power of 50 megawatts, will be connected to the Olite substation, from which the renewable energy generated in the photovoltaic installation will be distributed to this locality and to the rest of the foral community.
According to data from 2023, photovoltaic energy in Navarre is the fourth technology in energy capacity, behind wind, combined cycle and hydraulics. By the end of that year, 5.1 per cent of total power was generated through photovoltaic energy. Compared to the data obtained in the Basque Autonomous Community last year, the company GES has indicated that "solar power will increase by around 25%".
The Subai Erakuntza Foundation has criticised the competence of private companies to make decisions on such projects. “Private companies decide what projects they want to do, when and under what conditions,” stressed the team of juridical-technical response to unsustainable projects in Navarra.
In addition, it has accused the Government of Navarra of a lack of soil regulation for the establishment of both wind and photovoltaic installations. According to the promoter, the government writes a text saying that it is planning, but in reality companies do, “for their benefit.” Subai has called on the Government to tackle the problems effectively and has called on citizens to get involved in the cause.
Environmental activist Mikel Álvarez has produced an exhaustive critical report on the wind macro-power plants that Repsol and Endesa intend to build in the vicinity of Arano and Hernani of the region. In his opinion, this is "the largest infrastructure of this kind that is... [+]
