The Amazon has 5,000 fires in July
- The Brazilian Government has stressed that, compared to the same month of the previous year (6,803), the cut was 26.8%. Environmental activists have denounced that 4,977 forest fires are also due to the illegal sale of wood and mining throughout the Spanish state.
According to information collected by means of Telesur, the fire season starts in June due to drought. During the year 2020, there were 103,161 fires and the record number of fires was recorded in 2017, totalling 107,439.
According to data provided by the National Institute of Special Research, during the first half of 2021, 3,609 square kilometers of Amazonia, the highest figure of the last six years, have been cleared. If this rate is maintained, it is estimated that the phenomenon can consume more than 10,900 square kilometres of forest throughout the territory.
Growth is attributed, among other reasons, to the policies of President Jair Bolsonaro, who is a defender of the exploitation of the natural resources of the Amazon. After strong pressure from environmental groups, on 29 June Bolsonaro decreed that in the Amazon and in the wetlands of Pantanal most of the burns were banned for 120 days.
