On the coast of Lapurdi, very close to the sea, it is intended to build a pool of 155 meters in length that emerges artificial waves in the lands of San Juan de Luz. It will occupy an area of 1,500 square meters, equivalent to ten pools. Next to this, a four-star hotel will be built with about 100 rooms, sales stands and a restaurant, among others. The project is of the company Boardriders, in collaboration with the company Wavegarden of Donostia-San Sebastián and with the support of the municipality of San Juan de Luz.
They complain that this macro-project will destroy natural spaces and farmland. And they added that the project has not been agreed from the very beginning with citizenship. The members of Herri Berri say that it is "absurd" to the environment, as it will increase the area of urbanization, will lead to the artificialization of land and the waste of energy and water, among other things.
Farmers in this area have been opposed to this project, along with other local and Lapurdi associations. One of them is the European Foundation for the Protection of the Seas and Beaches. They are opposed to projects based on artificial waves, even more "close to natural waves".
On February 22, the Basque College of Architects Vasco Navarro approved the plan for the construction of the project, and in the council of the people only the group Herri Berri positioned itself against the construction.
The Herri Berri group began on 17 July the collection of signatures "without artificial waves in Lohizune", after which in a few days the figure of 1,250 signatures was rolled out. Today, they have received the support of over 5,200 citizens of the Basque Country.
