Piztu Donostia has denounced that the City of Donostia/San Sebastian fined on the second Sunday of last year’s regatta two initiatives in solidarity with the Basque prisoners. He has described them as "an attack on solidarity with Basque prisoners".
On September 15, the Ertzaintza identified four people as presumed authors of the placement of a giant banner in the La Concha rail that read '47 in the village'. Six months later, the surprise came to them: Fine of EUR 400 for each of them up to a total of EUR 2,800. Half if paid within 15 days.
The City Council of Donostia-San Sebastian has sent them the sanction, based on article 42 of the Municipal Ordinance. It prohibits placements, stickers, banners, etc. in town. The Piztu Donostia campaign has just dubbed this ordinance as a Mordaza Ordinance and denounced that it seeks "political censorship".
ARGIA has contacted people who have been fined. "Decades ago, in the regatta it became the tradition of the Anti-Tarras to hang on the Concha a banner of support for the Basque prisoners taking advantage of the sporting event. It is a kind of tradition that a few days before a giant banner is prepared and launched among the neighbors." The banner is usually placed in a strategic location so that traineras go out and reach the goal and can appear on television.
In much harder and crude years it has also been put on and although people have often been identified and cartels removed, fines have never been imposed until last year.
On the same day, the Municipal Police fined two people who sold material in favor of Basque political prisoners on San Jerónimo Street for not having authorization to put a table on the street.
"On the second Sunday of the September regatta, as in the last 30 years, women from all over San Jerónimo Street put a table with material for the Basque prisoners. At the orders of Goia, these two municipal police have imposed a fine of € 200 for not having the corresponding permission," said Piztu Donostia.
"It is clear that on that day there was a political decision on the part of the City Council to deal with the demands of the Basque political prisoners. Therefore, on 21 March we will offer a press conference shared with them, and of course next year we will also put the banner in the same place."
"Next to the banner that says 47 in the village you can see that of Kutxabank. It is clear to whom the public ordinance applies. He is a great exponent of this model," they denounced.
On 15 September, there were races in which, at the same time as these seven citizens were identified, 47 Basques went to Madrid to be tried the following day at the Spanish National Court, accused of working in favour of Basque political prisoners.
At the beginning of the year, the Piztu Donostia campaign was launched in the city to denounce the increase in fines imposed in recent years. Municipal sources reported that every three days a fine is imposed in the Gipuzkoan capital in relation to a social or political issue, so the sanction was not disseminated to Mozal City.
