The Intxorta Cultural Association 1937 and the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa have completed a study to identify Gipuzkoan children who fled the War of 36. After searching for and collecting testimonies and data from exiles and their relatives in different archives across Europe, the association has been able to identify 10,232 cases: 5,053 men and 4,960 women. They add that, although the review has been completed, if new names are found, they will be entered in the database being developed. This database will be published on the website of the foral institution in the coming weeks.
Although they did not participate directly in the war of 36, the children of the war suffered seriously the consequences of the conflict, as being very young had to flee into exile. We have identified 56 Gipuzkoan municipalities as the origin of these minors and there is no information about another 246 people. Most exiled children left San Sebastian (3,681), Irún (1,590), Hondarribia (609) and Pasaia (571). But two cases have also been found in Abaltzizketa, Elgeta, Lazkao and Zegama, and two cases in Altzo, Zizurkil, Zaldibia and Asteasu.
The majority went to France (4,840), Catalonia (4,155), Belgium (580), the Soviet Union (465) and the United Kingdom (312). Some took refuge outside Europe and others in the state: Valencia and Madrid (26) and America: Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Chile or Uruguay (64). A further 459 children have been identified, but no information has been found on their destinations.
Ion Gambra, the Foral Director of Human Rights and Democratic Culture, and two representatives of the Intxorta Cultural Association 1937, Julia Mong and Josu Chueca, announced this in a press conference on Monday morning to present the study data.
Tribute of 18 March
In order to recover the memory of the children of war, two years ago a collaboration agreement was signed between the Intxorta Cultural Association 1937 and the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa. The objective has been to identify children born in war: their place of birth, with names and surnames and, where possible, obtaining a photograph and a brief history.
With the completion of the study, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa has organized an act of recognition and recognition of the memory of the children of war. The event will take place on Saturday 18 March at 11:30 in Kursaal.
