These are data from the Office for Waste Prevention and Circular Economy coordinated by the Department of Rural Development and the Environment. The Food Bank of Navarra (BAN) has held a news conference aimed at students of ESO and Bachillerato in Civican (Pamplona), where these data have been released.
Last year the Ministry of the Environment of the Government of Navarra reported that one of the three foods purchased in Navarre goes in the trash, especially because the citizens do not plan their purchases and for this they launched an Agenda for Reducing Food Waste. The Director General of the Department, Ana Brittany, explained at the conference that this agenda has been effective: "Food waste damages the environment by the waste of liters of water needed for the cultivation of these foods and by the greenhouse gases produced by their transport."
Bank President Marisol Villar quantified this volume of both water and greenhouse gases: It would be the waste of water from 974 Olympic pools or the carbon footprint of 32 air trips between Madrid and New York. In addition to serving about 9,000 families in Navarre, the food bank has avoided the waste of 2,572 tons of food last year.
