About 300 people meet in Ziburu to remember dead migrants and demand "safe ways" for migration
- Only one of the four occupants of the train in Ziburu, where seven people traveled, has survived. It has made it clear to the Judicial Police that it was a matter of avoiding police checks on the railways.
The accident took place on 12 October in Ziburu, the result of European immigration policy: four young Algerians who were on the roads to avoid police controls fell asleep because of the tiredness caused by the road and life. Three of the train occupants have died in the accident and only one has survived the tragedy. The latter has spoken to the judicial police and the reason for their presence on the spot has been known.
About 300 people met yesterday in front of the San Juan de Luz station in memory of the three young people who died and once again called on the institutions for a fairer and more open immigration policy. In addition to the agents working for the rights of immigrants – Irungo Harrera Sarea, Etorkinekin, Diakite, Cimade – other structures called for protests, including EH Bai, CGT, LAB and Europe Ecologie. From the site, they denounced that the controls established by the police make the routes to immigrants "more dangerous and charitable".
On the same day of the accident, the Baiona prosecutor stated that the deceased were Aljis between 21 and 40 years old. At the end of the concentration, a floral offering was dedicated to the three deceased by the train, which accumulated dozens of flowers at the entrance to the station.
The need to risk life to avoid the police
The path of those who, abandoned everything, have to reach Europe is full of obstacles and almost all of their accesses are closed. In recent years, the route between Irun and Hendaia has become the main access point for those who want to reach France or nearby areas. Each year, around 7,000 migrants arrive in Ipar Euskal Herria – about 600 immigrants spend each month at the Baiona Pause Centre. As the administrative border has arrived, police control is present at all times. Immigrants are therefore forced to face the dangers of immigration.
The concentration ended with a cry from "Euskal Herria is a host country, ongi etorri errefuxiatuak", with a floral offering to the three deceased immigrants.
