Kote Cabezudo (Donostia-1948) is a photographer who moved around the social environment of the political and business elite of San Sebastian, well known in the fiestas of the jet set of San Sebastian, Diario Vasco and a photographer in different media –for example, the former mayor of San Sebastian, Odon Elorzari, was the author of the interview "Odon Elorza, un alcalde peculiar" in the Art of Living in the 1990s, named as a photographer and model of all the photographers in San Sebastian. Well, after 30 years of professional practice, a woman filed a lawsuit against Cabezudo in January 2013. He is currently charged with the following offences:fraud, disclosure of secrets, insults, threats, sexual abuse, creation and dissemination of child pornography, child abuse and rape. At this point there are 16 women behind the complaint, but there is no doubt that more cases will appear.
For five years Cabezudo has been free on the street. On May 4, Judge Julián García Marcos ordered his provisional detention after he recently took charge of the case. In fact, in the previous five years the victims had asked 10 times for the photographer to be put in prison, but all requests were rejected by Judge Ana Isabel Pérez Asenjo, despite the presence of photographs, videos and stories of several victims. Judge Asenjo has now been excluded from the case by the Superior Court of the Basque Country, which has accepted the complaint filed against Asenjo by the victims’ lawyer. In this complaint, she was accused of not doing anything to remove images of sexual assaults on women from the Internet. Victims and lawyers have often denounced that “for 14 euros anyone could buy and see some of the attacks and violations committed by Kote Cabezudo on children”.
The inoperability of justice is not the darkest part of this case. Although several victims have denounced a pederasty network in San Sebastian formed by well-known and powerful people, including politicians and businessmen, until recently the case has gone unnoticed both in the media and on the street. A support member for the victims of Cabezudo denounced that “until now there has been a great fear of going out to the streets and telling the truth, because behind Cabezudo there are many powerful people.” Feminists often claim that machismo covers all structures of society. In this case, the truth is only beginning to emerge.
We learned this week that the Court of Getxo has closed the case of 4-year-old children from the Europa School. This leads us to ask: are the judicial, police, etc. authorities prepared to respond to the children’s requests? Are our children really protected when they are... [+]
