According to the information provided by the Environment Minister, Arriola, the amount of waste that Verter deposited in the Zaldibar landfill so far is 2.8 million tonnes. Its equivalence is 1.7 million cubic meters.
In 2012 the catch figure was 185,022 tonnes. A total of 379,689 tonnes have been accounted for in 2017. And 500,000 tons each in the last two years.
For asbestos residues, Arriola provided the following information: In 2012, 337 tonnes were issued, totaling 4,253 tonnes in 2019. What Arriola did not specify was that the amount of asbestos waste received by the landfill was increased proportionally: In 2012, the fraction of asbestos residue was 0.18% of total waste. In 2019, 0.8%. A total of 16,148 tonnes of asbestos, representing 0.57% of the total waste from the landfill.
The 2007 Integrated Environmental Authorisation granted a licence of 2,744,975 cubic metres and a service life of 35 years. According to this forecast, the amount to which a continuous pace can be carried would be 80,000 cubic meters per year. Arriola says that this rhythm prediction was already exceeded in the second year, and at this rate he had another two or three years of life, until 2022.
Most of the landfill waste was land and rejects of recovery plants.
With the characterization of 510,999 tons of emissions in 2019, these are the percentages of residual nature.
23.11% Land.
22.88% rejection of recovery plants.
16.81% paper sludge.
13.15% steelworks and foundries.
10.45% of construction and demolition waste.
What waste was authorised for?
On the one hand, non-recoverable waste from mines, quarries, physical and chemical treatment of minerals. Also waste from: agriculture, fruit and vegetables, fisheries, forestry... waste from food preparation, etc.
On the other hand: Waste from the treatment of these materials is subject to prior authorisation: wood, pulp, paper and cardboard; surface chemical treatments; metal coatings; construction and demolition waste...
Third: waste destined for construction within the landfill (mainly land and slag). They shall not exceed 10% of the total amount of waste.
What about asbestos?
European legislation allows non-hazardous waste to be dumped in landfills, including construction materials containing asbestos.
