This sperm whale, which has died in Sardinia, contained 22 kilos of plastic in the stomach.
- According to the organization Seame Sardinia last weekend, the cetacean autopsy, which appeared dead on 28 March, has shown that it contained a large number of plastics in the stomach.
Arcipielado di La Maddalena appeared dead on the coast of the National Park. As veterinarians have been able to confirm, the cetacean was female and pregnant, so there have been no injuries. But there was something else in his stomach. 22 kilos of waste, mainly plastics.
Experts have not been able to specify the reason for the death of the animal, but one of the options is that it had difficulty feeding it normally, due to the accumulation in the stomach of residues that do not decompose.
Biologist Cinzia Centelegghe explained to the newspaper La Stampa that this is the first time a cetacean has been found with so many plastic residues in the stomach of Italian waters.
In December of last year, near Naples, another sperm whale also appeared dead and in this case plastic remains were also found in its womb, although on that occasion experts pointed out that the cause of death was another.
The Italian Environment Minister has publicly condemned the death of the cache and announced that the government will shortly propose a new law to limit the use of plastics.
Euronews has taken up these statements and stressed that the new measures include authorising fishermen to recover plastics from the sea and take them to land for recycling there, something that is currently banned.
