This Tuesday, the Ignacio Ellacuría 2021 Development Cooperation Awards have been delivered. The Feminist Articulation of Nicaragua and the Mothers Association of April (AMA, Mothers Association of April) have received the award from lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu for his work in favor of women’s rights and peace in Nicaragua. The candidature of Mugen Gainetik was proposed by the association to which Batasuna belongs in 2011.
When it comes to electing candidates, the jury has pronounced on the reasons justifying the choice of the winners. As he pointed out, they have been awarded “for the struggle for the rights and justice of women and the Nicaraguan people, and for contributing to this work to the awareness of Basque and international society”.
The Feminist Articulation of Nicaragua was created in 2004 with the objective of claiming the rights of women. As the Basque Government has explained, in recent years it has "led and has been supporting the victims of government repression" in the "protests" arising from the political crisis. ARGIA interviewed María Eugenia Gómez López in 2019, awarded on behalf of the articulation. Through his statements, he wanted to put on the table “the strong ties we have with Basque society, especially with our feminist sisters and social institutions”.
The April Mothers Association, on the other hand, has been created more recently. It is made up of relatives of the young people who died in the 2018 protests, and in total there are about 100 families. According to the president of the Association, Francys Valdivia, in the awards “the main axes of the AMA are the struggle for truth, justice and the construction of memory”.
The Ignacio Ellacuría Prize was launched in 2008 with the objective of rewarding entities and individuals who work for equality and justice among peoples from the CAV and/or their countries of origin.
