The new edition of the Bertsolaris Championship was going to start in September 2021, but as Bertsozale Elkartea announced this Tuesday, it will be deferred "just as it already happened with competitions in several territories".
"The contest is a cultural event that brings together a group of unthinkable people at the moment and, according to health criteria, some of the participants may at some point be out of competition. From start to finish, there are no guarantees for holding the championship," explained Bertsozale Elkartea.
The pandemic has already delayed other bertsolaris championships. The activities planned for this autumn in Bizkaia and Lapurdi, Nafarroa Beherea and Zuberoa, but have been suspended. In the case of the first, after achieving the first phase, they decided not to continue; in the case of the Xilaba Championship in Iparralde, it was suspended at the end of October due to the new confinement promised in the French State.
In the first months of 2021, the bertsolaris championships of Álava and Navarra were also held, and the Bertsozale Elkartea Association announced its deferral several weeks ago. "We have therefore decided to postpone not only the championships of those territories, but also the Bertsolaris Championship that takes into account what happened in those territories, without specifying new dates. We will decide on the new date based on the evolution of the pandemic and the situation of bertsolarism," said Bertsozale Elkartea.
In this situation, the Association will launch next year the initiative "promoting and organizing spaces for the enjoyment of bertsolarism".
