Cases of male violence increased by 13.13 per cent in Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa in 2022, according to police records. In total, 6,143 cases were counted in 2022. These data were collected in the Euskadi Crime Case Study 2022. It has published criminal offences recorded by the Ertzaintza and local police in populations over 15,000.
The majority of cases related to male violence have been suffered by the partner or former partner, 4,507. Below is domestic violence, with 1,116 cases, which the report classifies as "violence of a family member or a non-partner person". Finally, there are 520 cases of crimes against sexual freedom, i.e. sexual violence suffered by an author outside the above categories.
This latest type of violence has been the biggest. Compared to 2019, the year before the pandemic, crimes against sexual freedom have increased by 23%. Gender violence has grown by 10% since then and domestic violence by 11%.
Most other property crimes
The report covers all kinds of crimes. The crimes most committed are property offences (62%), especially theft. Cyberfrauds (13%), attacks on people (10%), collective security (5%) and those defining them as "others" (8%) follow.
Crimes with new technologies have increased by 41% since 2019 and in-person crimes by 6%. However, the majority of in-person crimes remain, 85 per cent.
