Then, some of the inhabitants of Canea, anarchists, and occupied by students, we turned this empty building, which is the property of the university, into a space for citizen organization, also organizing a residence for about fifteen people.
This political space with a small theater, conference room, bar, library, workshop and beautiful sunsets over the sea, has carried out campaigns against NATO and all the ejércitos, has spread anti-fascism, has defended farmers and their lands against wind farms, against tourism, we have practiced solidarity for immigrants and we have always been associated with other occupied spaces and struggles.
For today, the rector of the university and Basilis Digalakis, very close to Nea Őratia, in an attempt to boost his political career for the next few months, has dedicated several buildings owned by the polytechnic to the heads of tourism. Especially the buildings of Rosa Nera and its surroundings. Their idea is to turn it into a luxury hotel complex, a village already full of hotels, where in the last year many residents of Kanea have placed their homes on Airbnb, making it more difficult for workers to live in the village. The well-known story, the precariousness of capitalism, the feeding of more precariousness. The citizens of Canea know, however, that the real meaning of this operation is the political success of trying to expel the anarchists from the right-wing ballot box.
The sense of occupation emerges strongly if we look at the past of the building. Located in a 13th century fortress on the Port of Canea, it is open for the first time to all citizens. In Crete over the last 100 years, Greek authorities have been imposed in the form of Monarchy and Dictatorship. The building that embodies Rosa Nera has always been favored by the powerful as an administration or military residence. During the Nazi occupation, for example, the Gestapo tortured numerous fighters in their cellars. And now the bourgeois powers want to recover it in the interest of capital.
It seems that the polytechnic and the hotel company have reached an economic agreement for the next 25 years for 9 million euros, which means that in the coming weeks they can try to empty Rosa Nera. Meeting time, 21-25 June, the 13th anniversary of the catalypsy is celebrated with initiatives such as concerts, a tribute to the late anarchist militant “Bardis Tsuris”, conferences, and an important demonstration. On June 13 we also held a demonstration in the village to say aloud that we will defend Rosa Nera.
We would like to convey our greetings to the members of the catalipsi, squats, squats and youth centres in struggle, at the same time as we make a call to solidarity. We are open to any type of protection, through text, action, photography, or when it is necessary to defend with us in the streets of Rosa Nera.
