The Earth uprising has warned the massive court. It has been determined that Azpeitia and Berango have cut “about 11,000 trees”, with a total width of nine hectares. They have placed sabotage in the context of the “eco-social crisis” and more specifically in the loss of soil “fertility and biodiversity”.
Forest vs industrial monoculture
“Despite the constant propaganda of the forestry industry, it must be clearly stated that these plantations are not forests. Forests are complex ecosystems with life diversity, made up of plants, fungi and animals of different ages, sizes, shapes and colors,” the movement explains. He has denounced that the industrial model is based on the monoculture of fast-growing trees such as pine or eucalyptus: “The use of a single species, its short and extraction in a few years for short to do, the heavy machinery used and the tracks used to move it severely damage the soils of the mountains”. They say that the wealth and diversity that have matured for centuries has been endangered “in few generations.”
The movement accuses the industrial wood production sector of “green bleaching”, setting as an example Smurfit Kappa, Iberpapel and Kutxabank: “They disguise themselves as environmental protectors while they are primarily responsible for reducing natural spaces.” They denounce that this laundering exercise is done by companies “with the complicity of the public administration”, “example of public-private chiringuitos such as the forest”. These lands also manage “precarious and migrant” exploited people. “I work especially dangerous because it is a sector with a very high accident rate”.
Call to stop “diminishing” projects
The Earth Climbing movement has considered that the industrial planting of trees is “equivalent to other crushing projects to stop”. These include the TAV, highways and electric highways or renewable energy macro-projects.
The movement has claimed the need to promote other food and forestry models and to hinder the industrial model: “We believe it is essential to curb the machinery and the aggressive practices of this ingenuity driven by the hunger for money. That’s why, with initiatives to create valleys and stop this attack, we invite you to undo the industrial plantations.”
