Abertzale Sanrokada rebellion starts in Gernika and burns the Spanish flag

It was a nationalist rebellion in Gernika called Sanrokada. In the popular food organized on San Roque Day, some nationalists began to scream against Spain, and as the atmosphere was heating up, they took off the Spanish flags that were hanging in the Gernikarra and Traditionalist associations (liberal and carlist respectively) and burned them screaming “long live Basque liberated”. It was the first public action of nationalism, when the Spanish Government tried to eliminate the foral regime of the Basque provinces. There were many conflicts in this regard, for example, days later, on 27 August, the Spanish police killed three people in San Sebastian during the demonstration against Sagasta.
