In Chile, senators Salvador Allende and Raúl Rettig mourned with a gun. After intense debate in the Senate, radical Rettig challenged socialist Allende. They both survived. 18 years later, when Allende came to the Chilean presidency, already reconciled, Rettig was an ambassador to his government.
