Patrice Lumumba was murdered, president of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He was the country’s first president after his liberation from Belgium. He was killed under the coup d'état sponsored by the United States and Belgium, frustrating efforts devoted to Pan-Africanism and social and economic justice.

He said: “Without dignity there is no freedom, without justice there is no dignity, and without independence there are no free people.”
