It was part of the International Colonial Exhibition, opened since May for the promotion of the European colonial powers. This "savage" population, deceived by the colonies, had to entertain the "civilized" French. Kana had to suffer continuous humiliation while living in appalling living conditions. Proof of this was that they died during their stay in Paris.
