The midwife María San Juan de Garonda was burned alive by the Inquisition in Mungia. He was arrested at the witch hunt in the Lordship of Bizkaia. 24 witnesses testified against him, as his mother, that he had smoked on fire 30 years earlier, and that he was known as a witch.

He was accused of witchcraft, heresy and brutally tortured. The inquisition documented, among other things, that they used the garrucha technique, that is, that they tied one or both hands on a rope and tortured them by pulling a pulley.

She was convicted, taken away, publicly read the sentence and burned in the cemetery of the church of Santa Maria de Mungia. Mary's mother 50 years earlier (1478) was also burned by witchcraft. Mary always denied all charges against her.

Finally, they hung the Sanbenito within the church with the following message in Spanish: "María San Juan de Garonda, wife of Juan de Sentucho Cubero, neighbor of the portico of Mungia, condemned by heretics, apostats and witches. A thousand five hundred and eight years."
