A group of foralists led by Sergeant López Zabalegi rose up in Obanos and Puente la Reina. The insurrection was provoked by a decree that reduced the forces and soon the incidents spread to different places in Hego Euskal Herria.

The decree was promoted by the Liberal Finance Minister Gamazo, but failed to do so. In memory of the victory, the Monument to the Fueros was built in Pamplona.
