First Zugarramurdi arrests and start of witch hunt. Four women were accused of being witches: Estevania Navarco, María Pérez Barrenechea, Juana Telletxea and Palacio María. They were taken to Logroño and imprisoned. Then it was learned that they were not tortured, but fearing torture they self-inculcated. They made statements full of lies and fantasy, as later proved. The inquisition sowed panic in the village and the ball began to grow in the weeks and months that followed.
