On the boat La Amistad 53 Africans were raised in Cuba to be sold as slaves. They succeeded in killing the captain and several sailors and forced the others to put the ship on its way to Africa. However, the sailors cheated and took them to the American coast.
In this country, although slavery was legal, the import of slaves was prohibited. Thus, African kidnappings were able to return to their hometown in 1842, two years after the United States Supreme Court declared the kidnapping and transport of someone from their home country illegal.
