King Leopoldo II of Belgium proclaimed that Congo was his personal colony. Then they lived one of the cruellest examples of European colonialism. Acquired at the Berlin Conference, it managed the territory privately until in 1908 it annexed its property to Belgium. Between eight and ten million people died in Congo.
