Independence leader Eloi Machoro and militant Marcel Nonaro were killed by French gendarmes in the Kanaky Islands. A young European killed the previous day was used as an excuse to kill Machoro, the minister of the provisional government promulgated by the Frente Cana and the Socialist for National Liberation.
