The battle of Montejurra begins during the Second Carlist War. The Carlist guerrillas triumphed almost twice against the liberal army and kept Estella in control until the end of the war. Since then, Jurramendi became a symbol of Carlism and every year they celebrate their pilgrimage. In the last years of Franco, the pilgrimage became a demonstration against the regime, and in 1976 the ultra-right gunmen began to shoot and kill two young men.
