The Soviet cosmonaut Juri Gagarin became the first man to travel into space, in the Vostok 1 spacecraft. Juri Gagarin was the son of a humble family and his father, for example, was a carpenter. This initiative took place in the context of the Cold War and the Space Race, in a competition between the US and the Soviet Union.
