The expedition led by Juan Sebastián Elcano landed in the port of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, turning to the land. The chief of the expedition was Fernando Magallanes, but he was killed in an attack on indigenous people in the current Philippines. Soon after Elcano took over him. The aim of the expedition was to create from the West a way of appropriating Molucca species of similar value to gold in Europe, for the benefit of Spanish imperialism that was expanding in that century.
