José Martí, a poet and revolutionary, was born in Havana. He fought for Cuba’s sovereignty over Spanish and American imperialism. In 1882 he formed the Revolutionary Party of Cuba and later collaborated in the organization of the uprising of 1895, declared War of the Independence of Cuba. He died there, shot by the Spaniards.

It's a charismatic figure for the South American left.
