Jasser Arafat was elected president of the Palestine Liberation Organization. He held office until his death. Many Western countries rejected it, accusing them of “driving terrorism.” His attitude towards Israel was also too soft for some Palestinian liberation organizations. It was an important political figure for the Palestinians.
