All political prisoners in Northern Ireland were released. It was one of the points of the Good Friday Agreement and the Republican and Unionist prisoners took to the streets. The trial ended with the last 78 prisoners in Maze prison in Belfast (52 Republicans and 26 Unionists), releasing 428 prisoners within 22 months. The agreement was approved by the citizens by referendum in May 1998 and was an important milestone in the peace process in Ireland.
