For the first time, they publicly defended gay rights in Germany.

Lawyer and writer Karl Heinrich Ulrichs publicly defended gay rights. This was the first time that the German Congress of Jurists had called for the elimination of laws against homosexuals. The rest of the men in Congress, shouting, did not allow him to conclude. Three years earlier, his books were banned and confiscated in Saxony, Berlin and many places in Prussia. In Germany he is recognised as the first man to publicly declare his homosexuality.
