South African police arrested Steve Bi, a major anti-apartheid activist

South African police arrested Steve Bi, founder of the Black Conscience Movement and an important anti-apartheid activist. He claimed that blacks would never get freedom if they felt less than whites. On 11 September, he was transferred to Pretoria, tied naked in a Land Rover for 1,200 kilometres. He died the following day of torture at the age of 30. The racist government said that hunger died from a strike. 20 years later, police recognized that Biko had been killed.
