The Navarro bishop of Vitoria, Cadena Eleta, banned the placing of Euskaldunes names on children

The Navarro bishop of Vitoria, Cadena Eleta, banned children from naming Euskaldunes. Many Basques said that if their children were not Basque names they would not be baptized. Faced with this, “with paternal reflection,” he rejected his intentions. According to the bishop, nationalism “obscured intelligence” and “broke the heart” of young people. Months after the death of the Eleta Chain, Rome overturned the ban on Basque names for children.
