Eleven people were arrested in Araitz, Navarra, on charges of "witchcraft"

Eleven people were arrested in Araitz, Navarra, under the charge of "witchcraft". After torture, sixteen people were arrested in the coming days with the information obtained. They were taken to Pamplona prison and twelve were killed before the trial – ten women and two men. Fermín Lodosa Andueza, Araitz's cacique, was at the origin of all this. He began a witch hunt against the citizens who became angry with their excesses. In 1984, director Pedro Olea made the film Akelarre based on these facts.
