Toussaint Louverture, leader of the Haitian revolution, dies in a French prison

Toussaint Louverture, one of the most important political and military leaders of the Haitian revolution, died in a French prison, far from his home country. He led the slave revolution in the French colony of Saint-Domingue. After his death, slavery was abolished and Haiti gained independence by ceasing to be a French colony.
