When General Francisco Franco was one of the chiefs, part of the Spanish army hit a coup. The coup failed because it did not gain power in a few days, but as a result a workers’ movement was organized to seize weapons and take control of the workshops and lands, starting a three-year war and a 40-year fascist dictatorship. The persecution against the Basque and the Basque people was total.
