Fidel Castro announced that Cuba was home to illiteracy. The Literacy Campaign lasted for two years for all people in the country to learn how to read and write. In pre-evolutionary Cuba, 23% of the population was illiterate.

Since then, this day is celebrated in Cuba on the National Day of the Educator.
