The first Basque school in history was inaugurated in Bilbao, under the name of Colegio

They opened in Bilbao the first school in history that taught only Euskera, named Colegio. Promoted by Resurrection María Azkue and financed by the nationalist Ramón de la Sota, the project offered primary in Basque. At that time, in Bilbao the Basques represented about 20% of the population, and the Basque country had been completely abandoned by the authorities outside the educational system. However, the project failed to stabilize and was closed soon afterwards. However, it was the antecedent of the future ikastolas.
