The four deputies of Hego Euskal Herria decided to create Euskaltzaindia in Oñati. I. Basque Studies Gathered at the congress, agreed to create an entity to carry out the research and surveillance of Euskera. The birth took place at the height of the Basque Renaissance movement. Founded in October 1919, the first four scholars were: Resurrection María Azkue, Luis Eleizalde, Julio Urquijo and Arturo Campion. Between 1920 and 1936 the Euskera newsletter was published, but with Franco the activity of the institution was interrupted. In 1956, Euskaltzaindia met and in 1968 the project of unification of Euskera began.
