They published the first issue of Euskaldunon Egunkaria. It was the only national newspaper entirely in Basque, until in 2003 Judge Olmo ordered the closure. Thousands of Euskaltzales raised funds to start the project by acquiring shares. The Basque Government simultaneously tried to create another “public” newspaper in Basque, in order to weaken the Egunkaria project.Thirteen years later the Spanish Civil Guard unfairly closed it.
