The Basque Government in exile called for a general strike against the Pleito de Burgos

The Basque Government in exile called the citizens on a general strike against the Burgos Court. Lehendakari Leizaola, through a document that denounced the situation in Euskal Herria, strongly condemned the torture suffered by the defendants in the hands of the police and joined the general strike that had taken place on the first day of the trial.

Sixteen ethnic groups tried to turn the issue against Franco. Mario Onaindia, the last to testify, broke the trial screaming “Viva Euskadi Askatua!” and a scandal emerged when all the defendants were sung and taken out of the room with force by the Basque Army. The recording of this moment was recorded clandestinely and broadcast by hidden hand, causing a strong social emotion in Basque society. Six of the defendants were sentenced to death, but finally, because of the force that was taking the pressure against Franco, these death sentences were not complied with and were replaced by prison sentences.
