The statue of the Spanish conqueror Diego de Mazariegos was shot down in Chiapas. 15,000 indigenous peasants, on the fifth centenary of the beginning of the conquest of America, denounced the theft and massacre of indigenous peoples in San Cristobal de las Casas. Shortly thereafter, in 1994, the Zapatista army EZLN began an uprising in Chiapas.
