Following the rebellion against President Robert Guëi in the Bolikost, Laurent Gbagbo took over as president

Following the rebellion against President Robert Guëi in the Bolikost, Laurent Gbagbo took office as president. Although Gbagbo won the country’s first democratic elections, Guëie did not accept the result, but his protests forced him to leave office. The Gbagbo programme focused on socialism, nationalism and anti-colonialism, the latter, especially against France.
