Bergara's hug symbolized the end of the war between Carlists and liberals. Carlist General Maroto signed the agreement two days earlier with Liberal General Spartero in Oñati. In the convention the Carlists approved the reign of Elisabet II.aren and the Spanish Constitution, and in return said that the Liberals would respect the Basque forces “always under the constitution”.
