The Nazi German army came to Iparralde and occupied part of the border. Lapurdi and Nafarroa Beherea went to Nazi control. Zuberoa was under the Vichy collaborative government, chaired by Marshal Pétain. In November 1942 the Germans, with the help of the Italians, took over the whole of Vichy, so the whole of the Northern Basque Country came under their control.
